All this has led to the dissolution of the ancient relationship of form and scale, the loss of complexity and identity and the reduction of the rep-resentativeness of places and spaces. In the urban design of the contemporary city, particular attention must be paid to the “speed” of the public space; it is necessary to create “walking and cycling cities”, inclusive and safe cities that put the social needs at the center of urban strategies. The slow mobili-ty, opposing the hyperactive speed of social com-munications, can contribute to structuring public spaces and enhancing their “social mandate” and becomes, therefore, the new urban connective that imposes new modes of travel, crossing and emo-tional enjoyment. The road is, above all, a public and social space, and for this reason infrastructures must be considered strategic resources for the in-clusive urban project. We have promoted some ex-periences in this field in some design workshops in Calabria, in Sicily and in a recent experience in the historic centers of Barcelona and Rotterdam and we are developing this topic inside a research on the connectivity of internal areas.

Abstract

61La mobilità lenta nella strutturazione degli spazi pubblici urbaniFrANCesCA MorACi1, CeLesTiNA FAZiA2, MAUriZio FrANCesCo erriGo3slow mobility in the configuration of urban public spaceAbstract The public space of contemporary city is not often the result of an urban composition project, but, on the contrary, it is the result of fragmentary urban design; it is often the emblem of unexpressed (com-plex) needs.
