This paper concerns the dynamic response of multi-span beams with an arbitrary number of external translational supports and internal rotational joints, endowed with flexibility and viscous damping. Based on the theory of generalized functions to treat the discontinuities of the response variables, a complex modal analysis is pursued for the free vibration problem. The response to stochastic inputs is then computed by the complex mode superposition principle, upon deriving orthogonality conditions for the eigenfunctions.

Abstract

This paper concerns the dynamic response of multi-span beams with an arbitrary number of external translational supports and internal rotational joints, endowed with flexibility and viscous damping. Based on the theory of generalized functions to treat the discontinuities of the response variables, a complex modal analysis is pursued for the free vibration problem. The response to stochastic inputs is then computed by the complex mode superposition principle, upon deriving orthogonality conditions for the eigenfunctions.
