The crop-root relation study, in viticulture and fruit growing, has produced little information about scion effect on root system. Work purpose is to increase the knowledge trying to define the plant hypogeum system of determinate graft combination. Observations were carried out during 2004 on graft-cuttings of grapevine in order to evaluate the action of the scion on root system of the rootstock. The grapevine cultivar “Nerello mascalese”, “Gaglioppo” and “Greco nero” were grafted on the 779 Paulsen rootstock. All three cultivar showed, in the root system of rootstock, interesting effect on development pattern, on dry matter total amount and distribution (%) in root system component. Similar development patter was observed with cultivar “Greco nero” and “Nerello mascalese” but the cultivar Nerello mascalese induced the lowest growth rate and amount of dry matter. The cultivar Gaglioppo showed a linear growth pattern and highest efficiency. Since dynamics of the relationships between scion and rootstock is strongly conditional from several variables (environmental and agronomic) it is necessary to reduce the environmental variables to be able to ensure the repeatability and then the standardization of the product.
