The research studies and conceptualises strategies for the re-appropriation of public space by focusing on the role of civil society and local government in the creation of relational commons. The nature of this theoretical exploration is broadly interdisciplinary, involving the fields of urban planning, economics, cultural economics, sociology, and economic geography. The thesis, divided into four chapters, attempts to answer multifaceted conceptual blocks using a broad literature on the economic theory of the commons. The first chapter aims to reflect on the notion of public space and its evolution over the years. In addition, it addresses the new valences it is assuming because of the current dynamics, which configure it as a combination of social and spatial dimensions and redefine its relationship with social capital. The second chapter considers the ongoing tensions between private use and increased private ownership̀ of urban space, on the one hand, and the right to the city exercised by citizens, on the other. The third chapter provides a significant contribution in clarifying and defining the semantic contours of mutually interrelated keywords such as urban commons, commoning, common goods, public interest and explores the concept of "cultural commons". Equally significant is the study of the role that can be played by public governance and how it can be rethought from a collaborative perspective. The fourth and last chapter illustrates two Italian experiences of commoning, offering a particular perspective on its functioning in relation to factors such as space, time, and institutional limits. Of particular interest to the study is the attempt to understand how active groups of citizens re-appropriated public spaces have by establishing a dialogical and cooperative relationship with local administrations
