The earthquake of 1783 represents for Reggio Calabria a split between the present and the past. The medieval urban system has been definitively abandoned due to the reconstruction of the post-earthquake city. It is possible to reconstruct the image of the eighteenth and nineteenth century city through a careful integration between historical maps and travel diaries. The Aragonese castle, the only architecture inside the walls that endured over the centuries, is the linking element among the documentary sources.

Il terremoto del 1783 rappresenta per Reggio Calabria un punto di rottura tra presente e passato: con la ricostruzione della città post sisma, l’impianto urbano medievale veniva definitivamente abbandonato. È possibile ricostruire l’immagine della settecentesca e ottocentesca città attraverso un’attenta integrazione tra cartografie storiche e diari di viaggio. Elemento di cucitura tra le fonti documentarie è il Castello Aragonese, unica architettura intra moenia resistita nel corso dei secoli.
