The increasing awareness in the limited availability of fossil energy resources and thenegative effects on the environment caused by their use moves the scientifi researchtowards the development of new technological solutions in order to reduce the energyand environmental impacts of buildings. This especially happens in Italy, where almost90% of the buildings were built before the enforcement of any laws on building energysaving. This paper aims at evaluating the energy behavior of an existing building located in the city of Catania, characterized by Mediterranean climate. In particular, the contribution of different retrofiting envelope solutions was assessed, such as greenroofs and green façades. The present study could be divided into two phases: the fistphase was aimed at identifying the most suitable technological solution to improve theenergy effiiency of the existing building; the second one was aimed at quantifying theenergy aspects of different green system combinations integrated into the envelope.Furthermore, using dynamic simulations validated by experimental results, it wasfound that the green façade with a dense foliage allowed the greater reduction in theindoor air temperature. As a consequence, a reduction in the cooling load by 32%was obtained. Therefore, the study shows that green facades are a viable solutionfor limiting energy consumption in buildings, allowing economic savings during theoperational phase of the building. Finally, green facades also allowed environmentalbenefis, contributing to the improvement of the urban microclimate, to the mitigationof the urban heat island and to the reduction in pollutant emissions.

Abstract
Finally, green facades also allowed environmentalbenefis, contributing to the improvement of the urban microclimate, to the mitigationof the urban heat island and to the reduction in pollutant emissions.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
