Cities and architecture of the Dominicans in the Viceroyalty of Calabria. The expansion of the Dominican order in Calabria began with the foundation of the convent of Catanzaro in 1401 and continued throughout the 15th and 16th centuries, stopping only in the early 17th century with the foundation of about ninety settlements scattered throughout the territory. The research moves from the origin and development of the Order in the 13th century, identifying the architectural structures through structured settlement dynamics in a well defined geographical area. The Dominican foundations are wide spread in Calabria and are located both in major cities and many medium and smaller, minor towns. The structures were often built on existing buildings, were located both in the city center, at the border, on the city walls, and, in some cases, outside the town, close to major communication routes. The Dominican buildings can be considered a complex phenomena due to their large dimension. The research, on the basis of historical and documentary sources, identified most existing Dominican settlements in Calabria, although many had been abandoned, destroyed and/or transformed. A map was created to indicate the consistency of the vast estate of buildings which are still standing, comparing them to ecclesiastical and monastic typologies, in the wider field of mendicant architecture.

Abstract
A map was created to indicate the consistency of the vast estate of buildings which are still standing, comparing them to ecclesiastical and monastic typologies, in the wider field of mendicant architecture.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
