This study focuses on museum architecture from its origins to contemporary developments and trends. The concept of emptiness and its poetics, which is configured as a common thread that embraces this entire research project, also represents the epilogue of this study. The survey conducted has shown how the void, in reference to museum architecture, is a decisive theme on a theoretical level as well as in terms of the actual project. The dissertation has highlighted the themes that have characterized the museum since its inception as an architectural typology specially designed to preserve art from the nineteenth century and the trends on which the contemporary museum moves. The themes have distinguished themselves in Temple of Art, Anti-Museum and City Report / Artwork. The trends have been codified as Spatial, Economic, Virtual, Geographic, Of variation of meanings. The critical analysis made between themes and trends has, in both cases, brought the focus back on the theme of vacuum as an element able to hold together the entire work on the basis of design as well as theory. The assumption of research is to praise the void, to think about the museum of the future and what kind of space the museum is looking for in relation to the various forms of art that are emerging in the world. Parallel to the theoretical study, the research takes advantage of the tool of drawing. This serves to carry out a critical analysis which, starting from the reading of the plan of the project considered significant, leads to the construction of study schemes that show the key elements of the selected museums. Particular attention has been focused on the rotunda that is configured as the architectural translation of the theme of the vacuum in the museum
