Abstract

In contemporary urban landscapes that are increasingly extensive and multifunctional, subject to continuous processes of densification and reconversion, public space once again plays, as in the historic city, a decisive role in defining the level of quality of life, a fundamental element of economic development and the social and environmental balances of today's societies. In European contexts, in particular, where urban regeneration processes caracterise the main activity, the project of networks of public spaces becomes fundamental to ensure the success of the development strategies in order to frame the interventions within an overall and not partial vision changes in cities. Through the evidence of a series of experiences conducted in different urban realities such as Italy, Germany and the Netherlands, this research intends to verify the most important role that public space plays in the development and redevelopment of cities thought understanding what is the public and contemporary spatial production, operating a process of description through which retinking the materials of which it is composed. The thesis, structured in two parts, is divided into seven chapters, each of these constitute separate research that acts as an introduction and support to the next chapter. After having retraced the themes that characterize the debate between public space and urban regeneration in the first chapter, the need emerges to identify the elements that make up the public spatial reality, proposing a process of simplification of the spatial reality capable of providing the means and tools necessary for the main analyses. Considering the city as an organic syntax and therefore characterized by elementary units that act as an urban lexicon, in the second chapter the research methodology consists in deconstructing the public spatial reality in its elementary components. Once the elementary components that characterize the public space of the historic city and the modern city have been identified in the third chapter, with particular reference to the morphological, functional and social aspects, a synthetic classification of the contemporary ones is proposed which highlights the main qualities that one open public space must possess to be vital, interconnected and attractive. The aggregation criteria of the elementary components, dealt with in the fifth chapter, are dictated by the need according to which a certain space, in order to be vital, cannot be composed of isolated units but must constitute a network, an "urban polarity", capable of create a system of public, interconnected, functionally varied spaces to fully reflect the complexity of the contemporary city. The final product is the definition of a reasoned series of elementary components and main functions to be included in the projects of networks of public spaces in the main urban regeneration processes, a summary framework to be inspired by rather than a further document to be followed in an attempt to restore a holistic key to the urban project
