Abstract
The relationship between the spatial configuration of the urban organism and public health is established evidence in the literature. Among the compositional and contextual factors that acting directly on the built environment indirectly influencing health, the public space certainly represents one of the most important and includes all the unbuilt space in which community life happen. It is acknowledged that, the field of public space planning is composed by a distinct body of research based on protocols and guidelines that specify which characteristics of relational public space can affect the levels of health and well-being of individuals. Assumed the vastness of the topic, this research study focuses on the neighbourhood public space, investigating it through the identification not only of the individual characteristics that influence health outcomes, already studied in the existing protocols, but by examining the priorities and relationships, the interactions, and effects, between the same elements, adopting an ecological approach. The aim of the research is to create a protocol that provides basic indications for urban planners, architects, stakeholders, and politicians, but even more for all those public institutions located on the physical and social margins that do not have suitable design structures to organize projects on public space that have positive effects on health and well-being of individuals. The study is driven by the following research question: How can the priorities and relationships, interactions, and effects between the physical elements of public spaces, proposed in existing protocols, be used to influence public health through a planning protocol of neighborhood public spaces? To this end, was used the scoping review method that comprise an analysis of protocols, scientific articles, policies focused on the correlation between public health and public space design. These tests were accompanied by interviews with experts on the theme of the public space for health. The schematization of the results made it possible to establish priorities and relationships from which it emerged that the public space influences the levels of individual health through the increase of social inclusion, physical activity, well-being of disadvantaged classes and mental health and well-being. The deepening of these aspects constituted the framework for the definition of a planning protocol of the urban public space at the district level that can increase public health.
