Il rilievo delle relazioni. Analisi, narrazione e progetto dell'Old Orphanage di Stone Town a Zanzibar

There are places in the historic city that, more than others, capture its essence and complexity. This happens not only for their architectural qualities, but also for their emergence as major sites, repositories of a collective memory recognizable by its inhabitants. The Old Orphanage in Stone Town is one of them.Any intervention on such sites requires, well before the definition of the project, an analytical approach complementary to the scientific protocols of Relief. Such an approach implies the presence of a narrative component, in the literary sense, capable of substantiating the memorial appearance of the site by highlighting its visible and invisible relations of past and present.Located in an area of historic interest, at the crossroads of harbour and people and goods between the Indian Ocean and the shores of East Africa, the Old Orphanage is the ideal subject for a study in the valorization of a dilapidated urban place. Nominated World Heritage Site in the year 2000, Stone Town is nowadays in disastrous conditions, exposed as it is to the risk of uncontrolled exploitation for tourism that threatens its rich and complex history.

Ci sono luoghi della città storica che, più di altri, ne raccontano l'essenza e la complessità. Questo accade non solo per le loro qualità architettoniche, ma anche per il loro affermarsi quali luoghi notevoli, custodi di una memoria collettiva riconoscibile dai suoi abitanti. L'Old Orphanage di Stone Town è uno di questi. Intervenire su tali luoghi richiede, a monte del progetto, un approccio analitico in grado di completare la semplice attività del rilevare trasmessa dai protocolli scientifici. Tale approccio implica la presenza di una componente narrativa, letteraria in senso lato, capace di sostanziarne l'aspetto memoriale dato dalle relazioni visibili e invisibili che li hanno attraversati. Situato in un'area di interesse storico, crocevia portuale e approdo immaginifico di uomini e merci provenienti dall'Oceano Indiano verso le coste dell'Africa Orientale, l'Old Orphanage è un edificio cardine per una ipotesi di valorizzazione di un luogo urbano che, dichiarato nel 2000 Patrimonio dell'Umanità, versa oggi in un disastroso stato di conservazione, esposto al rischio di uno sfruttamento selvaggio a scopi turistici che rischia di cancellare il racconto della sua ricca e complessa identità.
