In 2016, a group of researchers from the Università Mediterranea of Reggio Calabria began the study of Byzantine churches built between the 9th and 16th centuries in Thessaly, on the slopes of Mount Kissavos (the second monastic site in the region after Meteora). The research is part of a wider study, carried out since 2013 and dedicated to oriental architecture in southern Italy. The choice to study Byzantine monuments on Mount Kissavos is mainly due to three reasons. The first is linked to their extraordinary stylistic and constructive unity. The second derives from the similarity between these churches and the contemporary ones of southern Italy. The third depends on the variety of situations encountered, both morphological and architectural. This variety makes it possible to consider the system of architectures examined, despite being numerically limited (16 churches), sufficiently representative of the historical and cultural context that generated it.
