This study was born in the context of the PhD in ‘Architecture’, curriculum ‘Architecture: Theory and Design’, pertaining to the Doctoral School of the ‘Mediterranean’ University of Reggio Calabria. The research was co-financed by the Calabria Region Operational Program 2014/2020, therefore, in accordance with the ‘Guidelines’ defined by the POR Calabria FESR/FSE 2014-2020 Axis 12 Action 10.5.6 ‘International mobility of PhD students’, falls within disciplinary areas consistent with the policies and interventions envisaged for the strengthening of the regional innovation system (S3 Regionale). In particular, the project in question refers to the Tourism and Culture sector. The research is part of the large area of humanistic culture, creativity, social transformations, inclusive society of the PNR 2021-27 and in the areas of innovation Tourism and Culture and ICT of the S3 Calabria 2021-27. The research was structured in four parts. The first part deals with the theme of the underground as a place of worship; in the section the symbolic aspects are exposed and discussed, the most significant paradigmatic aspects of the problem are examined, the most important strands with which the theme dialogues are presented through the exhibition of the state of the art. The second part is dedicated more strictly to the Calabrian territory. The theme of christianization is declined with respect to the illustration of the topographical and archaeological aspects relating to the period of late antiquity and the Byzantine domination in Calabria. In the third part the working methodology is exposed in relation to the practical experiments carried out in the field, aimed at the interpretation of the investigated architectures – pertaining to the category of the underground as a place of worship – through the tools of drawing and survey. The fourth part, of an analytical design nature, as a result of the study of the archetypal itineraries – the Tabula Peutingeriana and the Madaba Mosaic Map – proposes the formulation of a visual itinerary for the knowledge and use of the investigated elements. The research finds its practical-theoretical foundations in the disciplinary scientific sector ‘Drawing’ (SSD ICAR/17). As can be read in the new declaration approved by the CTS UID on 03/22/2021, “The sector deals with the generation, construction and analysis of drawings, images and models, as results of scalar representations of existing or planned realities; of the design and visual translation of concepts, ideas and narratives, as an expression of non-verbal language. In this sense, two main areas can be distinguished, with possible interrelationships: a scientific-technological one and a social-humanistic one”. In particular, the present research closely follows the social-humanistic aspect, establishing its own privileged relationships with the archaeological disciplines, and making use of the most innovative technological tools for surveying and representation. With regard to the built heritage – Cultural Heritage – the survey is seen “as a process of morphological and thematic knowledge oriented towards critical interpretation”. In this sense, in particular, in the relationship between architecture and archaeology, Digital Humanities find their applications in the field of surveying, allowing the acquisition of large quantities of data, in all those applications useful for cataloguing, management and to the analysis of the contexts and specific elements investigated.

Il presente studio nasce nell’ambito del Dottorato di Ricerca in ‘Architettura’, curriculum ‘Architecture: Theory and Design’, afferente alla Scuola di Dottorato dell’Università ‘Mediterranea’ di Reggio Calabria, che vede coinvolti i dipartimenti di Architettura e Territorio (dArTe) e Patrimonio, Architettura, Urbanistica (PAU) del medesimo ateneo. La ricerca è stata cofinanziata dal Programma Operativo Regione Calabria (POR-Calabria) 2014/2020, pertanto, conformemente alle ‘Linee Guida’ definite dal POR Calabria FESR/FSE 2014-2020 Asse 12 Azione 10.5.6 ‘Mobilità internazionale dottorandi’, ricade in aree disciplinari coerenti con le politiche e gli interventi previsti per il rafforzamento del sistema regionale d’innovazione (S3 Regionale). In particolare, il progetto in oggetto fa riferimento al settore Turismo e Cultura. La ricerca si inserisce nel grande ambito Cultura umanistica, creatività, trasformazioni sociali, società dell’inclusione del PNR 2021-27 ed alle aree di innovazione Turismo e Cultura e ICT delle S3 Calabria 2021-27. L’esposizione dei prodotti di ricerca è stata strutturata in quattro parti. La prima parte affronta il tema del sotterraneo come luogo di culto; nella sezione vengono esposti e discussi gli aspetti simbolici, vengono esaminati i più significativi aspetti paradigmatici del problema, vengono presentati attraverso l’esposizione dello stato dell’arte i più importanti filoni con cui il tema dialoga. La parte seconda è dedicata più strettamente al territorio calabrese. Il tema della cristianizzazione è declinato rispetto all’illustrazione degli aspetti topografici e archeologici relativi al periodo della tarda antichità e della dominazione bizantina in Calabria. Nella terza parte viene esposta la metodologia di lavoro in relazione alle sperimentazioni pratiche effettuate sul campo, finalizzata all’interpretazione delle architetture indagate – afferenti alla categoria del sotterraneo come luogo di culto – attraverso gli strumenti del disegno e del rilievo. Vengono qui presentate le schede dei 12 casi studio selezionati. La quarta parte, di natura analitico progettuale, quale esito di sintesi dello studio degli itinerari archetipo – la Tabula Peutingeriana e la Mappa Mosaico di Madaba – propone la formulazione di un itinerario di sintesi per la conoscenza e la fruizione degli elementi indagati. La ricerca trova i propri fondamenti pratico-teorici nell’ambito del settore scientifico disciplinare ‘Disegno’ (SSD ICAR/17). Come è possibile leggere nella nuova declaratoria approvata dal CTS UID in data 22/03/2021, “Il settore si occupa della generazione, costruzione e analisi di disegni, immagini e modelli, come esiti di rappresentazioni scalari di realtà esistenti o progettate; della progettazione e della traduzione visiva di concetti, idee e narrazioni, in quanto espressione di linguaggio non verbale. In tal senso si possono distinguere due ambiti principali, con possibili interrelazioni: uno scientifico-tecnologico e uno sociale-umanistico”. In particolare, la presente ricerca ricalca più strettamente l’aspetto sociale-umanistico, instaurando con le discipline archeologiche, e facendo uso dei più innovativi strumenti tecnologici per il rilievo e la rappresentazione, i propri rapporti privilegiati. Nei riguardi del patrimonio culturale costruito – Cultural Heritage – il rilevamento è visto “come processo di conoscenza morfologica e tematica orientato all’interpretazione critica”. In questo senso, in particolare, nel rapporto tra l'architettura e l'archeologia, le Digital Humanities trovano le proprie applicazioni nel campo del rilievo, consentendo l'acquisizione di grandi quantità di dati, in tutte quelle applicazioni utili alla catalogazione, alla gestione e all’analisi dei contesti e degli elementi specifici indagati.
