The novel concept of mobile hot-spots, characterized by a group of wireless users geographically moving as a whole, is gaining ground within the telecommunications scenario. The research community is interested in providing communication services to such networks by suitably interworking 3G and WLAN (Wireless Local Area Networks) technologies. In this paper we contribute to this research topic by proposing the deployment of Gateway solutions. These enable two-hop wireless paths between WLAN and 3G systems and perform control over high layer issues, such as QoS, mobility and AAA. Pros and cons of envisaged design solutions are addressed and their relevance justified against purposes, target users, and envisaged applications.
