Aim of the present paper is to contribute to the research issue of quality of service (QoS) assurance to multimedia traffic in a generic network environment in which the availability of resources is highly unpredictable. In this paper we propose a QoS control mechanism based on the idea of soft QoS guarantees. We will describe a middleware functionality which helps in maintaining the perceived quality of a multimedia application at agreed acceptability levels by reacting to the change in the available transmission bandwidth. The assessment of the performance of the proposed middleware is performed through its integration into with a UMTS system simulator.
