The musical instruments express specific formal qualities and evocative that go far beyond the sound functions. They are sometimes complex objects that are derived from empirical cultures, craft skills handed down from ancient folk traditions, spontaneous demonstrations of artistic vocations, ethnic and tribal residue, reminiscences to ancient myths and symbolic universes, spontaneous studies of geometric harmonies and "topological" shapes. Are obvious references to the forms of nature, from which they draw a vocation to production and transmission of sound. To analyze shapes, patterns, decorations, materials and the mechanical of sound instruments, means tracing a path through history, mythology, material, empirical and figurative culture of peoples. They reveal themselves as inclusive material entity, where multiple expressions of arts and crafts converge. The sound instruments manifest themselves as an expression of an ethnic design that does not derive from an aulic and cultured language. It stems from the layering of popular traditions, the most genuine and far from dominant cultures, but capable of expressing the deepest essence of a people. The research collects and elaborates some thoughts about music, art, myth, geometry, architecture, resulting from the research practices carried out by the University "Mediterranea" of Reggio Calabria. The instruments, surveyed and drawn, belong to the collection of the "Museum of Musical Instruments of Reggio Calabria".
Gli strumenti musicali esprimono specifiche qualità formali ed evocative che vanno ben oltre la loro funzione sonora. Sono oggetti talvolta complessi che derivano da culture empiriche, abilità artigianali tramandate da antiche tradizioni popolari, manifestazioni spontanee di vocazioni artistiche, permanenze di residui etnici e tribali, richiami a miti antichi e universi simbolici, studi spontanei di armonie geometriche e forme “topologiche”. Sono palesi richiami alle forme della natura da cui traggono una vocazione alla produzione e alla trasmissione del suono. Analizzare forme, geometrie, decori, materiali e meccaniche degli strumenti sonori, significa tracciare un percorso lungo la storia, la mitologia, la cultura materiale, empirica e figurativa dei popoli. Essi si rivelano come un’entità materiale includente che coglie la convergenza di espressioni artistiche e artigianali molteplici. Gli strumenti del suono si manifestano come espressione di un design etnico che non deriva da un linguaggio aulico e colto. Esso scaturisce dalla stratificazione di tradizioni popolari, quelle più genuine, lontane dalle culture dominanti, ma capaci di esprimere la più profonda essenza di un popolo. La ricerca raccoglie e approfondisce alcune riflessioni su musica, arte, mito, geometria, architettura che scaturiscono da un’esperienza didattica e di ricerca tenuta presso l’Università "Mediterranea" di Reggio Calabria. Gli strumenti rilevati e disegnati fanno parte della collezione raccolta dal "Museo dello Strumento Musicale" di Reggio Calabria.
