In the paper, a close-form solution for the free surface displacement and velocity potential of short-crested (three-dimensional) wave groups interacting with an encounter large-scale current, whose direction of advance can be generally different to the dominant wave direction, is achieved through the Quasi-Determinism theory (derived by Boccotti in the eighties). The solution has been applied to investigate the space-time evolution of the wave groups, by taking into account the effects of three-dimensionality, and those associated to the changes of intensity and direction of the current.

Abstract

In the paper, a close-form solution for the free surface displacement and velocity potential of short-crested (three-dimensional) wave groups interacting with an encounter large-scale current, whose direction of advance can be generally different to the dominant wave direction, is achieved through the Quasi-Determinism theory (derived by Boccotti in the eighties). The solution has been applied to investigate the space-time evolution of the wave groups, by taking into account the effects of three-dimensionality, and those associated to the changes of intensity and direction of the current.
