Tsunami is a phenomenon consisting of sea waves due to a rapid movement of a large mass of water. This paper analyzes the current International and Italian legislation on tsunami risk alert and inundation maps and describes a more accurate mapping procedure, applied along the Calabrian coasts. This procedure will be carried out considering the existing alert levels but using more detailed data. In a second phase, these alert levels are expected to be improved considering different tsunami triggering and propagation mechanism in addition to the only earthquake source and considering the effects of coastal morphology and shoreline erosion processes.

Abstract

Tsunami is a phenomenon consisting of sea waves due to a rapid movement of a large mass of water. This paper analyzes the current International and Italian legislation on tsunami risk alert and inundation maps and describes a more accurate mapping procedure, applied along the Calabrian coasts. This procedure will be carried out considering the existing alert levels but using more detailed data. In a second phase, these alert levels are expected to be improved considering different tsunami triggering and propagation mechanism in addition to the only earthquake source and considering the effects of coastal morphology and shoreline erosion processes.
