The paper deals with an experimental study carried out by a Norwegian GeotechnicalInstitute (NGI) type simple shear (SS) apparatus. Both drained and undrained tests are performedon dry Toyoura sand, prepared by two reconstitution methods, namely air pluviation and moisttamping. Two existing interpretation methods are adopted to analyse the shear strength behaviourof the tested sand. The reliability of the methods was assessed by comparing test results obtainedby SS device with those gathered in triaxial compression tests under the same test conditions.
