La digitalizzazione del patrimonio archeologico: dall’immagine alla forma / Digitization of archaeological heritage: from image to shape

The processes of digitization and new interactive fruition technologies have radically changed the relationship between objective reality and virtual reality. Increasingly, we are migrating from the physical world to a hybrid environment that mixes material and informational content. This mutation is also inevitably affecting the sites for the preservation and enjoyment of historical cultural heritage, which, after the forced break due to COVID-19, have seen a revival of the digitization paths already underway. Such a rapid transformation process, besides offering extraordinary opportunities, also hides risks of trivialization and emptying of content, sometimes induced by an overly casual use of technology. The paper highlights some indications provided by the international scientific community and European institutions that aim to ensure the scientific reliability, durability and interoperability of the digital heritage. These principles have inspired the digitization process of the finds of the Museo Archeologico Eoliano “Luigi Bernabò Brea”, a virtual patrimony that, in addition to guaranteeing the contents for the construction of a digital library and database for scholars in the field, has allowed obtaining digital models for the realization of inclusive fruition strategies through storytelling and prototypes for haptic.

I processi di digitalizzazione e le nuove tecnologie di fruizione interattiva hanno mutato radicalmente il rapporto tra realtà oggettiva e realtà virtuale. Sempre più si sta procedendo verso una migrazione dal mondo fisico ad un ambiente ibrido che mescola contenuti materiali e informazionali. Tale mutazione sta interessando inevitabilmente anche i luoghi di conservazione e fruizione del patrimonio storico culturale che, dopo la pausa forzata dovuta al COVID-19, hanno visto un rilancio dei percorsi di digitalizzazione già avviati. Un processo di trasformazione così rapido, oltre ad offrire straordinarie opportunità, nasconde anche dei rischi di banalizzazione e svuotamento dei contenuti, talvolta indotti da un uso troppo disinvolto della tecnologia. Il paper evidenzia alcune indicazioni fornite dalla comunità scientifica internazionale e dalle istituzioni europee che mirano a garantire l’affidabilità scientifica, la durabilità e l’interoperabilità del patrimonio digitale. Principi a cui si è affidato il processo di digitalizzazione dei reperti del Museo Archeologico Eoliano “Luigi Bernabò Brea”, un patrimonio virtuale che, oltre a garantire i contenuti per la costruzione di una digital library e un database per studiosi del settore, ha consentito di ottenere modelli digitali per la realizzazione di strategie di fruizione inclusiva attraverso storytelling e prototipi per una fruizione aptica.
