Abstract

A peace treaty is an agreement traditionally devoted to ending international armed conflicts. More than three years after the Russian Federation’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, hostilities continue unabated and a peace settlement still appears far away. This chapter discusses the typical structure and essential elements of a peace treaty, scrutinising practice from the entry into force of the United Nations Charter to the present. It provides several directions for the drafters of a future peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine and highlights the primary limits placed by contemporary international law on such an agreement.
