This chapter provides evidence from North American cluster organisations fostering more sustainable modes of production. While extensive literature has dealt with the cluster concept in the light of regional economic development, the 'directionality' of clusters remains under-investigated. This chapter adopts the meta-organisational lens on clusters, seeing these as representatives of multiple members, and discusses their role as agents in orienting businesses towards clean technologies. After discussing the policy climate in North America and its support for the transition towards clean technologies, this chapter disentangles the role of cluster secretariats in influencing cluster members' business development towards clean technologies. The analysis also elucidates the rationale of firms in joining such meta-organisations.
