This paper deals with the methods currently used in Italy for hydraulic hazard evaluation. Advantages and disadvantages of the methods for bringing an area into compliance with safety requirements are analysed. Further, the consequences on the urban development are investigated. At this purpose, maps of Reggio Calabria at different times have been used.
