The theme deals with the case study of the remains of Byzantine fortifications along the limes crossing the Regione Calabria and on the role that these bulky and fragile preesistences represent in the definition of Byzantine architectural characters. The survey phase is characterized by campaigns on the sites of Byzantine architecture. The methodological process uses archeological and architectural equipment for survey. The aim is to provide a state of studies and research of the Byzantine system in Calabria with an interest in the diachronic reading of the fortified system that connotes it. This system is highlighted by identifying the route of the main existing tracts that, through the presence of remains or architectural elements still identifiable, define the ancient limes of the fortified Byzantine system.

Il tema trattato si occupa del caso studio dei resti di fortificazioni bizantine lungo il limes che attraversa la Regione Calabria e sul ruolo che queste ingombranti e fragili preesistenze rappresentano nella definizione dei caratteri architettonici bizantini. La fase del rilievo è caratterizzata da campagne sui siti delle architetture di epoca bizantina. Il processo metodologico utilizza attrezzature con finalità archeologica ed architettonica per il rilievo. Il fine è di fornire un quadro sullo stato degli studi e della ricerca del sistema bizantino in Calabria con un interesse alla lettura diacronica del sistema fortificato che lo connota. Tale sistema viene messo in evidenza attraverso l’individuazione dei percorsi dei principali tratti-vie ancora esistenti che tramite la presenza di resti o di elementi architettonici ancora individuabili, definiscono l’antico limes del sistema fortificato bizantino.
