On the Strait of Messina the landscape has delineated some “great rooms”, i.e. spatial surroundings, looking out over the sea. Here we can find 15 little towns that have similar characteristics. The cities that I’ve chosen are part of this complex system and show good examples of integration between site, architecture and space fruition. The research analyses, with the same method, Forza D’Agrò, Mandanici and Alì. The aims of this research are: to create a support for the knowledge and awareness of the site; to improve information for a better safeguard and restoration of the villages centres, and to investigate the Spirit of the Place with some unconventional analysis. In this paper I will try to explain how to describe, at the same time, the tangible and intangible heritage of a place. In my opinion, to really understand the spirit of a place we should overlap different layers with different analyses. So we can position, side by side, the architectural survey, which shows every modification and alteration, with the survey of the ephemeral and evanescent modifications.
