Abstract

In the wine industry, more than in other areas, such as innovation, change, improvement, adaptation, development, can be a tool for maintaining or increasing levels of efficiency and competitiveness. The innovation processes are the result of a convergence of factors, both technological developments in production processes (both in the agricultural production of grapes, both during wine processing), the action carried out on the product "wine", from companies and operators (innovators), through communication strategies, presentation, marketing, etc.. With regard to the innovations introduced as part of the production techniques, one of the most interesting aspects with regard to testing, at the level of the agricultural segment, of the plants with very high density (approximately 10,000 plants per hectare), proposed in order to ensure a high level of grape quality through the very low yield per plant, which is compensated by the high unit investment. This paper concerns the technical and economic analysis of a number of vineyards in the above-mentioned type, built and operated by a winery leader operating in Calabria characterized by a strong orientation towards technological innovation of production processes and the improvement of product quality. The aim of this study is to determine the thresholds of convenience for the construction of such systems in function of the price level of processing grapes, using financial indicators (Net Present Value and Internal Rate of Return) drawn up on the basis of the costs of management system and detected at the company office.
