It is necessary to calculate the value of the extreme wave height to determine the maximum force acting on the port piers. In the paper, the design wave height has been calculated in different Italian and American locations using, respectively, the data of the Italian wave metric net (RON) and the data NDBC of the American Oceanographic and Atmospheric net. To do this, different statistic distribution laws are been adopted: normal, log-normal, Weibull and Gumbel probability distribution functions. Comparing the different functions, for a return period of 100 years (typical to design harbor defence structures), the extreme value of significant wave height has been obtained with the Gumbel distribution. While the normal distribution law supplies lower levels of the significant wave height.
