Fortified farmsteads in Calabria. The recovery of Calabria’s cultural heritage through the augmented reality

This paper relates to the fortified farmsteads of Calabria and includes a proposal for related University-level spin-off based on the augmented reality. The research offers an opportunity for assessing rural Calabria’s structural heritage and identifies 26 fortified farmsteads. The research group has compiled a dossier describing the features and has carried out a graphic analysis, essential for recovery and re-use. A software for displaying digital information on portable devices is required for the development of spin-off. It will be possible, as the project progresses, to superimpose virtual information on real places. It could also be used for organizing thematic itineraries. This technology could serve for promoting tourism, (for example, through digital infopoint) or in commercial applications (for example, by offering virtual showcases).
