Sociability of Public Spaces has been the centre of urban planning anthropological studies for quite time either in academic field or in on-ground implementation field. However, the difficulties encountered were to concretely identify, define and evaluate physical qualities on which the Sociability is based and hence realized. Contemporarily, the prominent placemaking approach emerged in the urban design field paving the way to correlate between the physical qualities and conditions in which these public spaces prosper taking in consideration the social and cultural aspects of specific place-based contexts. Based on these notions, finding common grounds between the sociability of public spaces and Placemaking approach in Cultural-oriented urban regenerated processes tended to be the missing link with a robust methodological empirical framework to evaluate the public spaces performance indicators known as the Public Space Index. Hence, the main aim of this research is to understand the dynamics of sociability and social mixing in the public spaces that help shape the cultural aspects of public space itself using the Placemaking Approach by implementation. In the first part of the thesis, the placemaking movement is investigated from the literature review of public spaces in terms of definition, social role, new trends of placemaking and the different on-ground placemaking implementation strategies. That is followed by the definition of Sociability, its’ role as an attribute of public spaces that has an added economic and cultural values and how can the urban design elements change its facets. The second part, builds up by an empirical methodology overlooking the quality criteria of public spaces in three similar case studies and how those criteria are qualified, quantified, and comparatively analysed. Then followed-up by a matrix of evaluation that compresses vertically four tools of evaluation (intercept user individual surveys, observational analysis, in-depth interviews with on-site and in-field experts, and finally micro urban planning smart tools). This matrix of evaluation is built horizontally across two identifiable categories (Public Life and Public Space) Metrics. That in sum, accounts on a mix of quantitative and qualitative methods to incorporate in the Public Space Index (PSI) matrix subsequently. The third and last part encompasses the implementation of the evaluation tools over the case study to evaluate the success or failure of using the placemaking approach and emphasizing on the sociability aspects towards achieving cultural-oriented urban regeneration projects aims. The Case Study Under investigation is the Northend Park on the Rose Kennedy Greenway, Boston, MA; the reason of this selection in specific that it takes part of a cultural corridor (identified as a cultural cluster in economic studies) that -in a wider scope- is to foster the infusion between theoretical approach from literature and the implicational part from the Sociability evaluation matrix of the case study on the ground. That said, with the aim to inset the Placemaking approach as an identifiable urban public policy, by which, we can change the facets of Human Public Spaces uses in cities today.

Abstract
