Fiumara d'arte in Sicilia: arte, architettura, paesaggio

Fiumara d'Arte is an artistic project established in 1986 in Castel di Tusa (ME), located in northern Sicily, based on the initiative of entrepreneur, collector, and artist Antonio Presti. Fiumara is a complex phenomenon. It is impossible to fit this experience within already known and only partially related artistic categories—I am thinking for example of the so-called Land Art phenomenon. The complexity of Fiumara derives from the particular political dimension of its projects and its "expanded" poetics, or from its peculiar ability to highlight principles and themes common to art and architecture, thus arousing particular reflections on landscape. In spite of the exceptionality of the case, to date, few scientific texts read this experience in its complexity. The aim of this thesis is therefore to interpret the complexity of Fiumara's artistic projects, revealing their potential usefulness to contemporary architectural debate and practice. The research project starts with three fundamental questions: what kind of art is that of Fiumara? What are its specific values? Is it possible to find within this artistic experience a theoretical and factual contribution regarding architecture and landscape debate?

Fiumara d’Arte è un progetto artistico nato nel 1986 a Castel di Tusa (ME), nella Sicilia settentrionale, dall’iniziativa dell’imprenditore, collezionista e artista Antonio Presti. Fiumara è un fenomeno complesso. È impossibile infatti incasellare questa esperienza all’interno di categorie artistiche già note e tuttavia ad essa parzialmente affini, penso per esempio al fenomeno della cosiddetta Land Art. La complessità di Fiumara deriva dal particolare valore politico della sua azione e dalla sua poetica “espansa”, cioè dalla sua peculiare capacità di mettere in luce principi e temi comuni all’arte e all’architettura, suscitando riflessioni precipue sul paesaggio. Nonostante l’eccezionalità del caso, ad oggi sono pochi i testi scientifici che leggono questa esperienza nella sua complessità. Obiettivo di questa tesi è dunque quello di restituire e interpretare la complessità delle azioni artistiche di Fiumara, rintracciandone l’utilità potenziale per il dibattito e la pratica architettonica contemporanea. La ricerca parte da tre interrogativi fondamentali: che tipo di arte è quella di Fiumara? Quali sono i suoi valori specifici? È possibile rintracciare in questa esperienza artistica un apporto teorico e fattuale alla disciplina/pratica architettonica e alla questione del paesaggio?
