The theme of the research focuses on the study of the floating city and on the identification of the criteria of spatial, functional and modular flexibility which seeks to present the latter with respect to the environmental conditions in which it is located. The thesis is divided into two parts, one of a theoretical nature and the other of an experimental-design nature. The first part elaborates a theoretical apparatus in which a possible origin of the floating city in the forms of settlement of the water of the city of Venice and the village of Ganvié is hypothesized and, in the same, its image is outlined as an expression of the utopias of the avant-garde movement describing its origin both from a conceptual and a formal-settlement point of view. Furthermore, the research work finds in Buckminister's radical reflections and plans. Among the examples of floating cities analyzed, a permanent element can be found, such as that of flexibility on a functional level. This characteristic - consequent to the principles of standardization and homologation - has the peculiarity of defining a specificity of posthumous use to the design, opposing the canonical design process. In fact, being structured as modular aggregations, these offer a functional transversality that will allow differentiated uses - residential, infrastructural or other - and unlike the initial models, they will be ductile on the technological-architectural level and, above all, flexible with respect to their location. Based on the latter reflection, combined with the aforementioned principle of flexibility, the research hypothesizes the location of a floating city in the Mediterranean context and, more specifically, in the Sicilian Channel. Within this framework, the thesis proposes the prototype of the floating city - as a temporary, self-sufficient and aggregable structure - as a potential architectural solution to social and environmental problems such as crossing - seen in terms of migration - in the Sicilian canal or the possible dynamics related to the rise of the waters, the decrease of the coasts and the absence of building land. The theoretical part ends by defining the floating city as an achievable utopia. The second part of the research, with an experimental-design character, summarizes and re-elaborates - through four progressive phases - the evaluation and design criteria of the floating cities. In the first phase, a comparison is made between some different floating city models in relation to the founding elements previously identified: settlement unit, module and border. In the second, instead, we proceed to the identification of the technical, functional, logistical and social criteria to which the floating cities must respond. Subsequently - by tackling the foundational theme of standardization - a standard module is determined. Finally, the fourth and final phase sees the application of the postulates assumed in the design verification of a floating settlement, called The Puzzle City. The development of this settlement system tends to subvert the self-referentiality of current models that have increasingly moved away from the utopia of the urbis shape and from the forms proper to architecture.
