The research deals with the theme of the contemporary urban form and the codification of the elements of contemporary territories through the map. The time frame is the period from the second half of the 20th century until today, in which it can be find the transition from the modern city to the contemporary territories. The great urban transformations - some of which have not yet been completed -, generate the dispersion on a territorial area of a multiplicity of anthropic elements, mostly fragmented and heteronymous. The goal of the research is to study this configuration and to propose the construction of a map. The reason is that, through the map, the representation is not an end-in-itself, but has the characteristics of an appropriation. This study focuses on contemporary urban form, also on possible territorial configurations still in progress, as result of a transformation (social, economic, structural and climatic) occurred in a short time and not yet concluded. Contemporary territory are considered as physical places, with characteristics of settlement. For the definition of contemporary territory, this research introduces for the first time the term «laterotòpos». Literally composed by «a latere» and «tòpos», this term is for the place that is beside and presupposes the existence of an "other" place beside "where to stand" or "from which one still depends". To represent the contemporary settlements this research proposes the analogical components of the map. By using figures and figurations, the map becomes a theorized synthesis of the existing and, sometimes, hypothesis of future project. In this research, the figure is a tool to decipher contemporary transformations and it is obtained through deduction from the image, interpretation of the form and interrelation between form and function. The aim is not to provide an exhaustive list of figures always relevant, but to propose a methodological approach to interpret the contemporary territories, identifying the phases of figuration for the construction of maps. Among the representations of cities, urban contexts or territories, this part is a selection of maps not chronologically ordered or only with a relation of scale, but considering the interpretative categories of the intention of the map. From the first intention to reduce the known world into a circular ecumene, passing by the series of mappa mundi up to the representation of a single element of the city. Third part – Conclusions and proposals. Conclusion of the research and proposal of a methodological approach for the interpretative and figurative description of contemporary territories.

Abstract

The research deals with the theme of the contemporary urban form and the codification of the elements of contemporary territories through the map. The time frame is the period from the second half of the 20th century until today, in which it can be find the transition from the modern city to the contemporary territories.
