Medieval Sicilian antiquity as a source for modern style. What were foreign travelers looking for as they travelled far and wide the “Regno” during 18TH and 19TH centuries? They were looking for precious materials - whether mines or ancient artworks - able to produce advancement and a new cultural and economic model for their contemporary society: a progress in knowledge. They were looking for Classic but, unknowingly, with a Dr. Frankenstein disposition, they dig the earth and evoke ghosts of the lost worlds. And as gothic novel laid foundations for modern novel; the discovery of the Sicilian Gothic Norman and the eclectic “hybrid” rising up from researches, experiences, and architectural experiments of those adventurous travelers will become the key of that dangerous lab that is Modernity.
