The chapter, according to a forthright interest in metallic leagues, deals with structural uses of aluminium: an application field characterized by strong experimentalism, still unsolved operational issues and, above all, by so few diffused specialist knowledge. The several matters approached deal with taking advantage of many opportunities offered by this material as well as acceptance of what, at now, represent its own limitations. Accordingly, the research work concern the development of defining and specialist informative aspects. Defining informative aspects encompass knowledge about material’s history, about production, specific regulation and bibliographical reference. Furthermore to the aforesaid aspects some common information are added: - technical characteristics (lightness, mechanical resistance, plasticity, atmospheric agents resistance and aptitude for superficial treatments); - production techniques (lamination, extrusion, foundry’s processes, forging); - possible applications and at the same time future modelling for structural employments at the rate of high ratio of mechanical resistance to weight; - technical-design aspects. Specialist informative aspects concern data and usage conditions particularly useful at the design stage. They have been reached from estimative analysis of some study-cases, advisably selected in order to underline innovation aspects that connoting the use of this material and making available useful informative syntheses connected to several design issues. Particularly, research activities took care of structural use of material in construction, and its diffusion, according to the different current employments: looms, reticular systems, panels, structures for wraps and continuous façades. Lastly, the research group analyzed and made available, in an estimative way, some specific informative data on material’s characteristics. All this in reference to some specific effects at the design level and for a qualitative control of the project: data transfer to the construction phase, graphic conventions, pre-sizing, performance during the time, environmental and economic performance.
Il capitolo, partendo da un esplicito interesse per le leghe metalliche, esplora il tema dell’alluminio per usi strutturali, un campo d’applicazione caratterizzato da forte sperimentalità, da problematiche operative ancora irrisolte e, soprattutto, da conoscenze specialistiche poco diffuse. Sono molteplici le questioni indagate che attengono allo sfruttamento completo delle peculiarità offerte dal materiale e all'accettazione di ciò che, invece, attualmente, rappresenta il portato oggettivo dei suoi limiti. Le tematiche trattate riguardano aspetti informativi definitori e aspetti informativi specialistici. Gli aspetti definitori esprimono informazioni sulla storia del materiale, sulla produzione, sulla normativa specifica e sulle bibliografie di riferimento. Ad esse si aggiungono informazioni di base: - caratteristiche tecniche (leggerezza, resistenza meccanica, plasticità̀, formabilità, resistenza agli agenti atmosferici e attitudine ai trattamenti superficiali); - tecniche di produzione (laminazione, estrusione, processi di fonderia, forgiatura); - applicazioni possibili e modellazioni auspicabili nella direzione degli impieghi propriamente strutturali e con riferimento all'elevato rapporto resistenza/peso; - aspetti tecnico-progettuali. Le informazioni specialistiche riguardano, invece, dati e condizioni d’uso particolarmente utili per il progetto, ai quali si è pervenuti attraverso l’analisi valutativa di casi studio, volti a sottolineare i caratteri connotanti l'innovazione del materiale e le sintesi informative in relazione alle diverse problematiche progettuali. In particolare, sono affrontate le questioni che attengono all’uso strutturale del materiale in architettura ai fini di una loro divulgazione, con riferimento ai diversi tipi attualmente impiegati: telai, sistemi reticolari, pannelli, strutture per involucri e facciate continue. Vengono, infine, analizzate ed esplicitate, in termini valutativi, informative particolari dei caratteri del materiale, in relazione alle specifiche ricadute sulle azioni del progetto e al suo controllo qualitativo: trasferimento delle informazioni alla fase di realizzazione, convenzioni grafiche, problemi di pre-dimensionamento, performance nel tempo, perfomance ambientali, performance economiche.
