The city has always been influenced by technological innovation. Historically, the mutual relationship between urban public spaces and technological innovations in the field of mobility and transport has led to crucial transformations of the city, radically conditioning and reshaping urban development models. So far this has required the necessary technical-regulatory and managerial conditions within the processes and governance tools of urban planning. Recently, the era of the Internet of Things and Artificial Intelligence, overcoming the concept of “smart city”, seems to open a new season of innovation the contemporary urban environment, introducing new forms of “intelligent” mobility into the urban dimension: connected and autonomous vehicles (CAV). It is condidered the mobility of the future in European and Italian government strategic policies, and has got the enormous potential to rethink and transform the public space of the city and urban design for a new and more efficient mobility management in cities - and more - and supporting the achievement of goals compatible with sustainable development. The research project proposes strategic guidelines for the implementation of new autonomous and connected transport modes in the city. Its purpose is to set the conditions for the definition of technical and urban planning standards and of the minimum technological and digital equipment that some intrinsic elements of the city (paths and roads, intermodal junctions, parking lots, etc.) must be equipped to allow experimental entry of the future “intelligent” mobility. The research project assumes an experimentation in an Italian metropolitan city, the city of Catania. In this context, a “hybrid transition” scenario is envisaged for the implementation of autonomous and connected mobility - public and private - also connecting the first / last urban mile to the strategic hubs of the city with a view to connecting to the European network and improving accessibility and internal mobility of the urban environment. It identifies the main road routes and modal interchange nodes for local public transport and develops an abacus of the new design rules on an urban scale.
