The paper deals with the discrepancy between the material presence of the colonial architectural heritage in sub-Saharan Africa and its symbolic dimension. The oppressive legacy of the historical memory prevents those peoples, even today, from an objective approach to the debate. The desire to affirm one's identity often results in a loss of interest in the cultural and material safeguarding of a valuable heritage. It is from it, instead, that their vindication could start anew.
