The strict construction regulations, which have dominated the reconstruction of Reggio Calabria after the 1908 earthquake, have consolidated a close connection between type and shape in residential areas, from which derives a regular and homogeneous urban image. In the course of time, we witness forms of modification of architecture on which locals apply a series of volumes declined in unexpected languages which defy the usual criteria of analysis and knowledge. Architecture turns into the translation of practices of the ordinary, an overwritten text which is permeated with new meanings in response to functional actions and needs. In the learning path we are confronted with the use of temporary heterogenous materials. Observations becomes the main tool of investigation in the analysis of ‘prints’ addressed to a past of belonging, a use that avails itself of the combination of moments of continuity and moments of discontinuity, of suspended parts and hidden roots in the custom of transformation of the built environment.

Le rigide normative costruttive, che hanno dominato la ricostruzione di Reggio Calabria dopo il terremoto del 1908, hanno consolidato, nei quartieri residenziali, una stretta relazione tra tipo e forma, da cui è derivata una immagine urbana regolare e omogenea. Si assiste, nel tempo, a forme di modificazione dell’architettura sulla quale vengono applicati, dai residenti, una serie di volumi, declinati in imprevedibili linguaggi che sfuggono agli usuali criteri di conoscenza e analisi. L’architettura diventa la traduzione delle pratiche dell’ordinario, un testo sovrascritto che si permea di nuovi significati in risposta ad azioni e necessità funzionali. Nel percorso cognitivo ci si confronta con l’uso di materiali eterogenei di tipo provvisorio. L’osservazione diventa il principale strumento di investigazione su come analizzare ‘impronte’ rivolte a un passato di appartenenza, un uso che si avvale del coniugare momenti di continuità e momenti di discontinuità, di parti sospese e di nascoste radici nella consuetudine della trasformazione dell’ambiente costruito.
