Cephalopods are recognized as sensitive sentinels of marine pollution because of their ecological relevance and vulnerability to environmental and chemical stressors. We investigated microplastic (MP) contamination in wild Octopus vulgaris from the southern Tyrrhenian Sea, combining analyses of MP ingestion and distribution within the digestive system (DS) with physiological, nutritional, and molecular indicators. This integrative approach links environmental exposure to biological responses and provides a practical framework for pollution monitoring.

Abstract

Cephalopods are recognized as sensitive sentinels of marine pollution because of their ecological relevance and vulnerability to environmental and chemical stressors. We investigated microplastic (MP) contamination in wild Octopus vulgaris from the southern Tyrrhenian Sea, combining analyses of MP ingestion and distribution within the digestive system (DS) with physiological, nutritional, and molecular indicators. This integrative approach links environmental exposure to biological responses and provides a practical framework for pollution monitoring.
