The act of representing city has acquired, over time, different meanings. the need of comprehension, expressed with precision of measurement and geometry, relative to practical and military issues, alternated with the desire to magnify, or imagine, the urban landscape in both of works of artists, realistic or utopian and prophetic ones, always affected by the use of methods and tools that the technique of representation has from time to time made available to them.

L'atto di rappresentare la città ha assunto, nel tempo, significati diversi. Il bisogno di comprendere, esplicitato attraverso il rigore della misura e della geometria, legato a questioni pratiche e militari, si è alternato al desiderio di magnificare, o di immaginare, il paesaggio urbano nelle opere ora realistiche ora utopiche e profetiche degli artisti, sempre influenzati dall'uso di metodi e strumenti che la tecnica della rappresentazione ha di volta in volta messo loro a disposizione.
