During the Modern Age Siena was characterized by important ceremonial and festive activities for many events that marked the city’s history. There were numerous occasions to organize backdrops to religious, political and festive events. The occasions included canonization of Saints, entries of Popes, emperors, cardinals, archbishops, princes and governors, wedding or funeral of leading figures as well as traditional festivities like Carnival. The Palio, in particular, was the summit of these extraordinary events which involved the city. The common aptitude of Tuscan people to organize celebrations shows a flair for changing celebrations of political and cultural importance, soon as instrumenta regni. Many urban pathways, in particular the main streets and the government buildings, such as Piazza del Campo and the Cathedral were reconfigured with ephemeral structures realized by Siena artists who completely transformed these urban areas. The image of the streets, squares, façades and interior of the churches were transformed by ephemeral architecture using a triumphal classic style from Roman culture with allegorical statues, drawings and celebrative inscriptions. The style was slightly different from the traditional architectural and urban tradition of Siena. The many events involved all the city along various itineraries followed by crowded processions. The ephemeral structures along the itineraries changed gradually and were animated by the citizens who, for a brief period had much in common with civil and ecclesiastic authorities, on those occasions. The city was transformed into an open stage where the actors were the citizens themselves. Engravings, drawings, reports and little printed books record these events which illustrated the iconographic and ceremonial program of the diverse celebrations. Through these instruments it is possible to reconstruct the pathways and protagonists, to identify the continuity and the differences of the ceremonial apparatus in occasion of religious and civil events in a city marked by a radical municipal tradition of a medieval matrix that was to remain vital over the course of time.
Durante l’età moderna Siena è stata caratterizzata da una rilevante attività cerimoniale e festiva, giustificata eventi che hanno segnato la storia della città. Le occasioni per allestire messe in scena che facevano da sfondo a eventi religiosi, politici e festivi, sono state numerose nel corso dei secoli. Le occasioni erano offerte dalla canonizzazione di santi, da ingressi papali, di imperatori, di cardinali, di arcivescovi, di principi regnanti e governatori, dai matrimoni o dalle esequie di personaggi illustri, oltre che dalle feste tradizionali del Carnevale e soprattutto del Palio, culmine dell’evento straordinario che coinvolgeva la città. La comune attitudine dei toscani ad organizzare e allestire festeggiamenti testimonia una tradizione costantemente rinnovata nel tempo ed è espressione della consapevolezza dell’importanza politica e culturale attribuita alle celebrazioni quali instrumenta regni. In tali occasioni ampie parti del percorso urbano, soprattutto le vie principali e le sedi rappresentative del potere, piazza del Campo e il Duomo, erano riconfigurate con apparati effimeri realizzati da artisti senesi, che attribuivano agli ambiti urbani un’immagine temporaneamente diversa. L’aspetto delle vie e delle piazze, delle facciate e degli interni delle chiese, veniva trasformato per mezzo di architetture effimere che adottavano un linguaggio trionfale classico di matrice romana, arricchito da statue allegoriche, dipinti ed iscrizioni celebrative; un linguaggio in parte estraneo alla consolidata tradizione architettonica e urbana cittadina. L’evento coinvolgeva tutta la città lungo itinerari seguiti da cortei affollati. La scena cambiava progressivamente ed era animata dalla partecipazione della popolazione che in queste occasioni ritrovava una temporanea familiarità con le autorità civili ed ecclesiastiche coinvolte. In un certo senso la città assumeva l’aspetto di un palcoscenico teatrale all’aperto, dove gli attori sulla scena erano tutti i cittadini. La memoria di questi avvenimenti è trasmessa da incisioni, disegni, relazioni, oltre che da libretti a stampa pubblicati che illustravano il programma iconografico e cerimoniale degli eventi celebrati. Attraverso questi strumenti è possibile ricostruire gli itinerari percorsi e i personaggi coinvolti; verificare la continuità o le eventuali differenze dei cerimoniali e degli apparati predisposti in occasione di eventi laici o religiosi, sullo sfondo di una città segnata da una radicata tradizione comunale di matrice medievale la cui essenza era destinata a rimanere vitale nel tempo.
