Alle origini dell’esplorazione: visioni e interpretazioni di un viaggio iconografico

This essay introduces the four volumes of the contemporary Voyagepittoresque, establishing their multiple relations with the work of thesame name, published by the Abbé Saint-Non in 1781-1786 and theextraordinary graphic repertoire produced by the artists sent by the Abbéto the Kingdom of Naples and Sicily.The first part of this essay focuses on the protagonists of the eighteenthcentury expedition and on the character of their activity in the light ofrecent graphic and documentary discoveries. The second part of the essayanalyses each contemporary volume as an integral part of the largerwork, directly connected to the 2015 conference dedicated to the criticaloverview of the sites of Southern Italy featured in the Voyage of Saint-Non.The first two volumes of the present publication are made up of acollective series of essays that develop the conclusions of the conference,regarding, respectively, the sections dedicated to the separate geographicregions and the final round table discussions.The following two volumes, of monographic character, are dedicated toCalabria. The region, which thanks to the iconography fixed by the artistsof Saint-Non appeared for the first time in the European Grand Tourimaginary. The third volume offers a chronological examination of theregion before and after Saint-Non’s publication, while the fourth volumesystematically analyse the context of the sites which were represented bySaint-Non’s artists.

Questo saggio introduce i quattro volumi del contemporaneo Voyage pittoresque fissandone le molteplici relazioni con l’omonima opera pubblicata dall’abate Saint-Non nel 1781-1786 e con lo straordinario repertorio grafico prodotto dagli artisti da lui appositamente inviati nel Regno di Napoli e di Sicilia.La prima parte è incentrata sui protagonisti della spedizione settecentesca e sul carattere della loro attività alla luce di recenti acquisizioni iconografiche e documentarie. La seconda analizza ogni volume come parte integrante dell’opera, strettamente connessa con il convegno del 2015 dedicato alla ricognizione critica dei luoghi del Sud Italia raffigurati nel Voyage di Saint-Non.I primi due volumi, a carattere collettaneo, sviluppano gli esiti del convegno, per quanto riguarda, rispettivamente, le sezioni regionali e la tavola rotonda finale.I due volumi seguenti, a carattere monografico, sono dedicati alla Calabria, che proprio grazie all’iconografia fissata dagli artisti di Saint-Non entrò per la prima volta nell’immaginario del Grand Tour europeo: il terzo estendendo l’indagine cronologica a prima e dopo l’opera di Saint-Non, il quarto analizzando sistematicamente il contesto dei luoghi in essa rappresentati.
