The problem of the ground-borne vibrations caused by trains has receivedconsiderable attention in recent years, due to the effects it can have on buildings, and on thepopulation, in terms of discomfort.The level of vibration can be attenuated by mitigation methods in the sourcereducing the excitation, or by mitigating methods in the path using barriers, or both.It is sometimes possible to reduce the exciting force or motion with mechanicalmodifications relocating or isolating the components, so that the generated vibration is nottransmitted to the support. In the proposed paper the effects of vertical viscous dampers onthe global system vehicle-wheel-track have been analysed. A comparison has been carriedoutamong damping and un-damping Shimmns freight wagon in empty and in loadedconditions.
