Five different metal oxides are tested as promoters for the combustion of dieselsoot containing a high amount of adsorbed hydrocarbons. The activity of Fe2O3and γ-Al2O3 in the exclusive oxidation of the hydrocarbon fraction is correlatedwith the surface area and strength of the metal-oxygen bond. The additionalpromotion of the combustion of the graphitic solid fraction by V2O5, CuO, andTiO2 is attributed to the low melting point of these oxides. The higher activityof Pt/. gamma.-Al2O3 for particulate combustion is explained by a spilloverof activated oxygen from Pt to Al2O3.
