This paper deals with the geometric analysis of the Roman mosaics found in the domūs of the archaeological areas of Volubilis, in Morocco, and Bulla Regia, in Tunisia. It analyzes the expressions of mosaic art which in the Roman Empire, between the second and fourth centuries A.D., attained a particular geometric decorative refinement. The tessellation of the mosaics of Volubilis and Bulla Regia is just an example of a cultural universe that for centuries has been a testimony to the lifestyles and myths of the Roman Empire and that today, if appropriately exploited, could contribute to enhance the knowledge and the identity of the Mediterranean heritage. The research proposes a reading of the mosaic apparatus through the study of the constitutive geometric elements. This leads to an analysis useful for the classification of figures and symmetry patterns, and understanding of their meanings. The methodology adopted is that of disassembly and reassembly of areas of mosaic tiling, creating a dialogue between the two-dimensional geometric elements of the flooring and the architectural context in which they are inserted.

The present work is the result of a full and integrated collaboration between the two co-authors. Specifically: Francesca Fatta wrote the following sections: Introduction; Methodology; The Speculation of Geometric Thought; Ornament and Symmetry: The State of the Art. Domenico Mediati wrote the following sections: The Mosaics and their Geometries - The Concept of Symmetry; - Identification of Unit Cell and Fundamental Region; - Border Patterns (Frieze Patterns); - All‐Over Patterns (Field Patterns); - Classification of Border Patterns. The case studies were divided as follows: Survey and Recontruction Model: Francesca Fatta Geometric Analysis and Identification of Symmetry Groups: Domenico Mediati The research was carried out with PRIN 2009-2011 funds. Impact The research analyses some Roman mosaics located in archaeological sites of international importance and in emerging countries, more specifically in the area of North Africa.The prestige of Nexus Network Journal guarantees an international dissemination and a relevant impact on the literature related to this topic. Methodology The multidisciplinary approach to the research integrates art-historical analysis, representation techniques and geometric-mathematical models of analysis and classification. In particular, the geometric analysis allows the classification of the mosaics in question according to the international systems of symmetry and tessellation of the plane. Originality For the first time in the international panorama, the research described in the paper applies the classification criteria of symmetry groups to Roman mosaics. This makes it possible to classify the mosaics according to geometric-mathematical schemes shared in the scientific literature and to highlight recurrent patterns in the geographical area concerned and in the historical period examined.
